When it comes to packaging, plastic is not a good thing. The packaging industry is a major user of plastics, accounting for about 42% of global plastics. This incredible growth is driven by the worldwide shift from reusable to single-use. The packaging industry uses 146 million tons of plastic, with an average lifespan of six months or less.According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, packaging in the United States generates 77.9 tons of municipal solid waste each year, accounting for almost 30% of the total waste. Packaging waste accounts for an astounding 65% of total household waste.Packaging also makes merchandise and waste disposal expensive. For every $10 of merchandise, $1 is spent on packaging. That is, 10% of the total price of the item is spent on packaging, which ends up in the trash. It costs about $30 per ton to recycle, about $50 to ship to landfill, and $65 to $75 to incinerate, while releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere.

So, it’s important to choose a sustainable, eco-friendly packaging, but what is the most eco-friendly packaging? The answer is much harder than you might think.

If you can’t avoid packing in plastic (which, of course, is the best solution), you have a few options. You can use glass, aluminum or paper. However, there is no right or wrong answer to which material is the most sustainable packaging choice. Each material has advantages, disadvantages, and the impact on the environment depends on many variables.

Different materials Different environmental impacts .To choose packaging with the least environmental impact, we must look at the big picture. We have to compare the entire life cycle of different types of packaging, including variables such as raw material sources, manufacturing costs, carbon emissions during transport, recyclability and reusability.
